North wins BNL invite

BEDFORD — No. 18-ranked Columbus North fired a 313 Saturday to win the 15-team Bedford North Lawrence Invitational at Otis Park.

Bloomington North edged No. 16 Jasper 320-321 for second. Brownstown Central and host BNL each shot 326, and Columbus East finished sixth with a season-best 328.

John Merritt tied for fourth individually with a 76, and Willy Davis tied for sixth with a 77 to lead the Bull Dogs. Tyler Wilks added a 78, Jack Schiavello and Alex Clark each shot 82 and Joseph Perkins had an 88.

Carter Greene led the Olympians with a 78. Ben Luedeke added an 81, Spencer Erfmeier had an 84 and Pierce Arnholt and Jamall Starks each shot 85.

SOFTBALL

Bull Dogs win twice

INDIANAPOLIS — Class 4A No. 3 Columbus North picked up a pair of wins in the Franklin Central Invitational, beating McCutcheon 11-3 and Franklin 9-3.

Maddi Rutan threw a six-hitter with 13 strikeouts and went 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBIs against McCutcheon. Kirsten Danford went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Miley McClellan went 3 for 4, Josie Lemmons went 2 for 3, Bailey King went 2 for 4 and Payton Morris had a home run and three RBIs.

Morris threw a seven-hitter against Franklin. Kaylee Cowan went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Kelsey Lovelace had a double and two RBIs.

The Bull Dogs (15-1-1) were trailing Franklin Central 6-4 in the fourth inning of its third game of the day when it was called because of rain. The Flashes had reached Bailee Scruggs for six runs before Rutan came on with two out in the first and shut them out on one hit over the next 2 2/3 innings.

Crusaders drop pair

CANNELTON — Columbus Christian dropped a doubleheader at Cannelton, falling 23-2 and 21-5, both in five innings

Jaren Shuler had a triple in the first game and went 2 for 3 in the second game for the Crusaders (1-2).

BASEBALL

Olympians split pair

Columbus East split a doubleheader with Bloomington South, winning the first game 4-2 and dropping the second 8-4.

Will Boyer threw a three-hitter in the opener. Five different Olympians had a hit.

East (4-12) led the second game 4-0 after five innings, but the Panthers scored twice in the sixth and six times in the seventh. Eli Tindell went 2 for 3, Chase Niese went 2 for 4 and Blake Borkhardt had a home run and two RBIs.

Jets rout Eagles

HOPE — Sam Louden threw a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts to lead Hauser to a 10-0, five-inning win against Jac-Cen-Del.

Zayne McCanlis went 2 for 2, Nathan Worland went 2 for 3 with two RBIs, Stryker Gill went 2 for 3 and Karson Stuckey had two RBIs for the Jets (11-5-1).

CC downs Bulldogs

CANNELTON —

Branson Carr wemt 4 for 5 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs and combined with Cam Watts-Pritchard combined on a two-hitter to lead Columbus Christian to an 11-2 win at Cannelton.

Watts-Pritchard went 3 for 4 with a double for the Crusaders (1-1). Noah Rose went 2 for 4 with a double, and Brandon Rehlander went 2 for 4.

Eagles top Lancers

EDINBURGH — Brown County broke open a 1-0 game by scoring 11 times in the fourth inning and went on to post a 16-4 win at Edinburgh.

Mikey Kobiernik and Jade Woolems combined on a five-hitter for the Eagles (3-9). Jack Sichting went 3 for 3 with a double, Woolems went 3 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs, Kobiernik went 3 for 6 with three RBIs and Rual Voils went 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Gabe Bennett went 2 for 3 for the Lancers (2-14).

Bulldogs blank Panthers

NEW ALBANY — New Albany jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings and went on to hand Jennings County a 7-0 defeat.

The Panthers (4-11) were limited to three hits.

Trinity splits pair

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran bounced back from a 4-0 loss in the opener to salvage a doubleheader split with a 6-4 second-game win against Class A No. 7 Indianapolis Lutheran.

Jackson Trueblood threw a two-hitter and had two RBIs in the second game. Sage Broughton had two hits and three RBIs, and Nathan Voelker and Luke Coomler each had two hits for the Cougars (7-9).

GIRLS TENNIS

Bull Dogs go 2-1

AVON — No. 11 Columbus North posted 4-1 wins against co-No. 15 Penn and No. 18 Avon before taking a 3-2 loss to No. 3 Jasper in the Avon Invitational.

Kathryn Wilson at No. 1 singles and Aya Saad at No. 2 singles both went 3-0 on the day for the Bull Dogs (11-3). Annabelle Sun at No. 3 singles and Siri Poludasu and Nino Akhalaya at No. 2 doubles went 2-1.

Panthers edge Spartans

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County won three matches in straight sets in a 3-2 win against Southwestern (Shelby).

Tatum Brown blanked Ella Rice 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Kaydence Lowman beat Makenzie Belton 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 singles for the Panthers (2-7). Gabi Morin and Trina Collins topped Lilly Despain and Kate Koffman 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Jennings’ Jocelyn Valdovinos fell to Tori Burkhart 7-6 (5), 3-6, (10-6) at No. 3 singles. Makenzey Carr and Mia Silvey lost to McKinley Correll and Lauryn Blondell 6-0, 6-4 at No. 1 doubles.

UNIFIED TRACK

North takes fourth

BLOOMINGTON — Columbus North finished fourth with 75 points in the Conference Indiana meet. Host Bloomington North won with 130.

Kayden Foster won his heat of the 400 meters in 1 minute, 24.79 seconds. Olivia Johnson finished second in her flight of the long jump (12 feet, 8 inches).

Finishing third in their flights or heats were Sydney Johnson in the shot put (22-10), Lydia Andrews in the 100 (29.94) and Noah Marsh in the 400 (1:02.46). Marsh, Foster, Nolan Riley and Gavin Bayne took third in the boys 4×100 relay (56.08); and Sydney Johnson, Lydia Kushman, Lydia Andrews and Melissa Milvert were third in the girls 4×100 relay (1:42.83).

East finishes fourth

BEDFORD — Columbus East finished fourth with 71 points, and Jennings County was sixth with 35 in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet. Host Bedford North Lawrence won with 125.

Pete Coriden led the Olympians with a third-place overall finish in the shot put (34- 1/4). Mackenzie Bailey finished third in her heat of the 400 (1:40.68). Mackenzi Allman, Sophie Anderson, AJ Hughes and Heidi Murphy were third in the 4×100 relay (1:28.41).

Jennings’ Emmaleigh Jones won her flight of the long jump (9-3). Finishing third in their flights or heats for the Panthers were Jayden Smith in the long jump (7-11 1/2), Chase Laman in the shot (19-8) and Olivia Huey in the 100 (16.82).
