Crosswalk painting to begin near airport

Starting in about a week, motorists should expect to see road closures near Columbus Municipal Airport as crosswalk painting occurs.

The Columbus Board of Works has approved a special use of right of way request from the airport for traffic control and closures lasting from May 15 to May 26.

According to the approved request, closures will occur in 24 locations along the following roads: Cunningham Drive, Vickers Drive, Poshard Drive, Central Avenue, Whitney Court, Middle Road, Grissom Street, Ray Boll Boulevard and Arnold Drive.

Airport director Brian Payne said these closures will be individual, with contractors only working on one location at a time. Additionally, only one lane will be closed at a time on the major roads.

“We would like to have a company install 24 AirPark Columbus branded crosswalks across the property,” airport officials wrote in their request. “The material will be a highly durable product showcased behind City Hall. The material used in heavy traveled areas will dry in minutes. The company will be responsible for traffic control, signage, and closure markers and Airport Maintenance Employees will be on hand to assist.”

Payne said that most of the locations already have crosswalks, though some are not yet painted. For the crosswalks that are painted, the existing markings will be ground down and removed, with new paint being applied. The new crosswalks will be bright blue with a white outline.

“We really wanted to showcase Airpark Columbus as a brand, as a special location,” he said. “Again, knowing as soon as you drive on to any portion of the property, that you’re somewhere special, that it’s very different from what we have across the rest of Columbus.”
