Hauser student named Indiana Academic All-Star

Rachel Hoke

HOPE, Ind. — A student from Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School has received recognition for her academic achievements and community involvement.

Rachel Hoke has been named a 2023 Indiana Academic All-Star. According to a release from the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP), the award recognizes seniors who “excel in the classroom first and foremost, but who also are actively involved in their schools and communities, and take on leadership roles in those activities.” The program is produced by the IASP in partnership with Purdue University and with corporate support from Lifetouch.

“Rachel’s college plans are to attend the University of Evansville to study neuroscience as a pre-med student,” said Hauser Principal Kris Fortune.

He said that Hoke’s achievements include being an AP Scholar, a Rising Star of Indiana and receiving honors from the National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program. Her extracurriculars include Student Council, Academic Super Bowl, drama, German Club President, Hauser Historians, Youth Leadership Team, Future Farmers of America, Health Occupations Students of America, peer mentoring, class president, Academic Team Captain, Found Mental Health Initiative founder, Feed the Farmer, Feed My Starving Children, Meals of Hope, Beyond High School Expo, and community theater.

Hoke is one of 40 seniors named as 2023 Indiana Academic All-Stars. Another 50 students were recognized as Academic All-Star Regional Honorees.

Every public and private high school accredited by the Indiana Department of Education is able to nominate one senior for consideration as an Indiana Academic All-Star. Schools choose their nominees based on a number of factors, including their transcripts, academic achievements, extracurriculars, community service and leadership qualities.

The 2023 winners were selected from a field of 276 nominees, with a selection committee choosing both the regional honorees and all-stars.

“The IASP Indiana Academic All-Stars program salutes academic excellence in the same manner that student athletes traditionally are honored,” IASP officials wrote. “By providing a showcase for academically talented seniors, the sponsoring organizations hope to accomplish the following objectives: Give academic achievement the prestige it deserves; Motivate students to recognize the value of academic excellence; Provide students with an incentive for academic achievement, and Promote a positive image of Indiana’s young people.”
