Free Movies in the Park light up Mill Race

“The Addams Family” is part of the Movies in the Park series.

You can watch the stars under the stars.

That’s part of the laid-back beauty of the Columbus Parks and Recreation Department’s free Movies in the Park series that recently opened with “School of Rock.” The family-oriented presentations are shown on an oversized, inflatable screen in Mill Race Park at 50 Carl Miske Drive in downtown Columbus.

Viewers simply bring blankets or lawn chairs for seating and snacks and drinks of their choice. Movies begin at dusk on Saturdays, except for the September film, which will be on Friday at dusk. Here is the remaining schedule:

  • June 10: “Space Jam.” Swackhammer (Danny DeVito), an evil alien theme park owner, needs a new attraction at Moron Mountain. When his gang, the Nerdlucks, heads to Earth to kidnap Bugs Bunny (Billy West) and the Looney Tunes, Bugs challenges them to a basketball game to determine their fate. The aliens agree, but they steal the powers of NBA basketball players, including Larry Bird and Charles Barkley — so Bugs gets some help from superstar Michael Jordan. Each of the NBA legends appear in the film.
  • June 24: “Addams Family.” When a man (Christopher Lloyd) claiming to be Fester, the missing brother of Gomez Addams (Raul Julia), arrives at the Addams’ home, the family is thrilled. However, Morticia (Anjelica Huston) begins to suspect the man is a fraud, because he cannot recall details of Fester’s life. With the help of lawyer Tully Alford (Dan Hedaya), Fester manages to get the Addams clan evicted from their home. Gomez realizes the two men are conspiring to swindle the Addams fortune and that he must challenge Fester.
  • July 29: “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.” Four high school kids discover an old video game console and are drawn into the game’s jungle setting, literally becoming the adult avatars they chose. What they discover is that you don’t just play Jumanji — you must survive it. To beat the game and return to the real world, they’ll have to go on the most dangerous adventure of their lives, discover what Alan Parrish left 20 years ago, and change the way they think about themselves — or they’ll be stuck in the game forever.
  • Aug. 26: “The Super Mario Brothers Movie.” Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi get the shock of their lives when they discover a parallel world populated by the intelligent descendants of dinosaurs. It seems they weren’t destroyed by a meteor millions of years ago but hurled into another dimension, and now they have plans to rule our world. It’s up to our unlikely heroes to battle the evil King Koopa and his Goomba guards, free the beautiful Princess Daisy and save mankind in this adventure of a lifetime.
  • Sept. 15: “The Thing.” In remote Antarctica, a group of American research scientists are disturbed at their base camp by a helicopter shooting at a sled dog. When they take in the dog, it brutally attacks both human beings and canines in the camp and they discover that the beast can assume the shape of its victims. A resourceful helicopter pilot (Kurt Russell) and the camp doctor (Richard Dysart) lead the camp crew in a desperate, gory battle against the vicious creature before it picks them all off, one by one.
