Unknown soldier memorial to be rededicated

A group honoring the memory of local soldiers who fought for the Union during the Civil War will rededicate a local memorial to the Unknown Soldier in Columbus.

The John B. Anderson Camp #223 of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War recently deciphered and preserved the stone inscription on a marker in City Cemetery that was placed on Decoration Day, which ultimately became Memorial Day, 1895.

Over time, the inscription had faded, so the members of Camp #223 commissioned a bronze marker so that “the message the memorial shared will carry on for a few more years.”

Members of the camp will rededicate the memorial during a public ceremony on Flag Day, June 14, at 7 p.m. at City Cemetery. Members of the group will appear in uniform, and the ceremony will include remarks from original speeches given 128 years ago.

The inscription reads, “In memory of the unknown dead who fell in our country’s service in the war for the union. A.D. 1861-65.”
