COLUMBUS
James William Herbert, 74, of Columbus, passed away at 3:40 p.m. June 22, 2023, at Franciscan Health in Indianapolis.
Jim was born July 28, 1948, in Greensburg, Indiana, the son of Robert William and Ruth Marie Schreiner Herbert. On April 26, 1975, he married Mary J. Condra of Columbus.
Mr. Herbert is an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Army. He worked in general maintenance at Cummins Engine Company for many years before retiring. He enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing, boating, camping, and growing vegetables in his garden. Most of all, he treasured being a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary; sons, Chris (Debbie) Herbert of Seymour and Benjamin (Sarah) Herbert of Columbus; grandchildren, Jay, Elsie, Bella and Becca; siblings, Don Herbert, Roberta Harpring, Wilma Cornn Young, Ruth Ann Williams, Catherine Kramer, Rosemary Ward, Barb Greiwe, Joe Herbert, Sue Burkhart, Walter Herbert, Bill Herbert, and Lynn Redelman, all of Greensburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents and older brother, Dick.
In keeping with the family’s request, cremation will take place, and a memorial service will be conducted at 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Richard Safford officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
