Hughes gets first sprint car win of 2023 at Tri-State Speedway

Columbus native J.J. Hughes picked up his first win in nearly four years on June 24 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt during the MSCS Sprint Car main event.

Columbus native J.J. Hughes picked up his first feature win of the season on June 24 at Tri-State Speedway in Haubstadt.

Hughes was the winner of the MSCS sprint car feature over Aric Gentry, Kendall Ruble, Critter Malone and Carson Garrett. Kayla Roell won the MMSA mini-sprint feature over Michael Larrison, Cody Knieriem, Brendon Cascadden and Parker Baumeyer.

Several winners at Brownstown

There were five racing classes on hand for Saturday Night Racing, with the Slicker Graphics Super Late Models paying $2,500 to win at Brownstown Speedway on June 24.

Kent Robinson of Bloomington jumped to the early lead, with David Webb stalking. Webb took the lead as the pair caught lapped traffic. Robinson stayed close and retook the lead near the end of the race. Robinson went on to score his first Slicker Graphics Super Late Model win of 2023.

Webb maintained second ahead of Jared Bailey, Chad Stapleton and Tyler Collins. Rounding out the top 10 were Justin Shaw, Tory Collins, Keegan Cox, Jarod Fleetwood and Willie Madison.

Chad Stapleton of Edinburgh visited Victory Lane for the second straight week in Graphix ILMS Pro Late Model feature action. Stapleton took the lead on lap three and never looked back in getting the win. A charging Raymond Humphrey made it interesting at the finish, but settled for second ahead of Alan Magner, Britan Godsey and Marty O’Neal.

Greg Amick of Spraytown led every lap of the Pewter Hall Super Stock feature to record win No. 1 for 2023. Behind Amick, multiple battles for the remaining feature positions were contested. At the checkers, it was Tucker Chastain, Zach Sasser, Austin Perry and Tanner Chastain following Amick.

Mickey Hines of Scipio jumped to the lead in All in One Pools Pure Stocks and went on to get his second win of 2023. The best battles on the track were from second on back where multiple divers swapped positions. Preston Carr, Brent McMillan, Davey Waggoner and Keaton Streeval completed the top five.

Phillip Boudreaux of Salem made it two straight wins in Flag 2 Flag Media Crown Vics. Boudreaux was pressured by Anthony Finley who was pressured by Kenna Day during the race. Finley and Day took second and third over Wayne Shoff and Eddie Snapp.

Fox wins at Bloomington

Brayden Fox of Avon won the sprint car feature on June 23 at Bloomington Speedway. Jake Swanson finished in second, followed by Jordan Kinser, Jadon Rogers and Braxton Cummings.

Jacoby Hines of Trafalgar won the open wheel modified feature over Derek Groomer, Ben Harmon, John DeMoss and Calen DeMoss. Matt Boknecht of Seymour won the super stock feature over Jordan Almanza, Josh Litton, Zach Sasser and Wade Goodale. A.J. Hobbs won the hornet division feature over Alex Wilson, Dale Hobbs, Skylar Ashley and Jeremy Shemwell.

Lewis wins at Paragon

Ricky Lewis of Camarillo, California, won the Johnson Memorial Race for sprint cars on June 24 at Paragon Speedway. The event is named after former track owners Mike and Sue Johnson. Jake Scott was second, followed by Jordan Kinser, Isaac Chapple and Hunter Maddox.

Cale Kern of Bedford won the super stock feature over Douglas McCullough, Jeff Allen, Mike Ham, and Hayden Groomer. Will McRoberts of Dupont won the bomber feature over Katie Grigsby, Jason Corson, Jason Trimmer II and Kyle Prince. Chris Hillman Jr. of Mooresville won the hornet division feature over Alex Wilson, Abby Stierwalt, Casey Elliott and Lee Sweat.

This week in racing history

From 70 years ago this weekend in 1953 at Columbus Speedway, Jim Quillen won the feature race over Carl Ford, Gerald Hopper, Larry Fleener and James Sowder.

From 60 years ago in 1963 at Mitchell Speedrome, Cecil Beavers won the super-modified feature over Dick Gaines, Calvin Gilstrap, Larry Miller and Mike Johnson. Beavers also won at Bloomington that weekend.

In 1963, the Columbus Go-Kart winners were Jim Devening, Mike Devening, John Arrington, Jim Welch and Tom Green.

Also from 1963 at Lawrenceburg, Dick Gaines won the super modified feature over Roy Robbins and Frankie Mack. Whitey Freeman won the stock car feature over Denny Harris and Gene Crittenden.

From 50 years ago in 1973 at Brownstown, Jim Curry won the late model feature over Gene Petro, Fats Coffey, Butterball Wooldridge and Don Hobbs.

Tim Clark wo the street stock feature over Earl Plessinger, Delbert Ross, Darin George and Randy Petro. In 1993 at Greene County Speedway in Bloomfield, Kelly Kinser won the Sheldon Kinser Memorial for sprint cars. Mike Bowling was second followed by Gary Trammell, Danny Smith and Todd Shields. Rick Hines took the street stock feature over Cale Kern, Don Fleetwood, Albert Webb Jr. and Carl Collins.

From 20 years ago in 2003 at Brownstown, Jason Setser won the late model feature over James Huff, C.J. Rayburn, Kevin Claycomb and Dan Sturgeon. Lee Hobbs won the modified feature over Tim Eddelman, Nelson Gingery, Brady Short and A.J. Flick. Steven Godsey took the bomber feature over Matt Cummings, Robert Walters, Darrell Burton and Jim Ruddick.
