CLARK COUNTY — Troopers and detectives from the Indiana State Police (ISP) Sellersburg Post are investigating after a single-engine plane crashed in a cornfield near Jeffersonville.
Around 8:30 a.m. Thursday, authorities were alerted to a possible plane crash near Port Road and Middle Road, approximately one mile north of the Ohio River and just east of the Port of Indiana. The crash was not visible from the road and was about 3/4 of a mile south of Middle Road. When officers and first responders arrived, they located a small, two-seater Diamond Katana personal aircraft lying upright in the field. Neither the pilot nor the passenger were injured. Both occupants were from Louisville, Kentucky, and advised they had flown out of Bowman Field in Louisville.
As is standard protocol in Indiana, ISP conducts the preliminary aircraft crash investigation and then turns all information over to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), which will conduct a separate and more thorough investigation. FAA authorities arrived on-scene Thursday afternoon.
After the preliminary investigation, detectives believe a mechanical malfunction may be to blame in the crash; however, the FAA will continue the investigation and make final decisions on the cause of the crash.
The Jeffersonville Police Department and the Jeffersonville Fire Department were the first to arrive on the scene and assisted Troopers in the investigation.
