Letter: City Council has simple choice on TIF districts

The Republic recently reported that the Redevelopment Commission is considering moving the Cummins TIF and the South Commons TIF districts into the Central TIF district because the debts covered by the TIFs to be moved have been retired. There are substantial funds generated by these TIFs.

The City Council has two options. They can end the TIFs and use this tax revenue for schools, police, firefighters, roads, etc., or they can continue to use this tax revenue as the magical mystery money of TIFs, where it funds projects of questionable economic value that are largely protected from public scrutiny.

I think schools and police are the preferable choice.
