After several years of playing on two or three of Columbus’ golf courses, this year’s men’s city tournament will be contested at one course.

Greenbelt will host the 70th edition of the Men’s City Golf Tournament Saturday and Sunday. The event dates back to 1954, when Joe Hutton won the first of his two back-to-back titles.

“It was just something where numbers hadn’t been great the last five or six years,” Greenbelt pro Keith VanDeventer said. “It’s not that it’s going to be great (numbers) this year, but we were just trying something different, seeing if we could get a little more interest. I intend to ask the players what they would like moving forward. It’s a city tournament, not for Greenbelt or Otter Creek. It’s for city golf, and we just want to make it the best for them. We want them to have the best experience they can have.”

Only 55 players, including 12 in the senior division, entered last year’s men’s tournament, when the first 18 holes were played at Greenbelt, and the final 18 were played at Otter Creek. Harrison Lake Country Club also has been used as a tournament venue in previous years.

Players still can sign up for this year’s event through 6 p.m. Wednesday. Entry forms may be picked up at Greenbelt, Otter Creek or Harrison Lake or can be printed off from the city’s Parks and Recreation website and turned in at Greenbelt.

Cost is $55 to enter, with an option for $10 per day for a cart, and $5 per day for range balls. Plaques will be presented to winners in each flight and gift certificates to at least top two and possibly top three in each flight, depending on numbers.

VanDeventer is hoping to pick up a few more entries in the next couple of days.

“I’ve taken in more here than I have in the past,” VanDeventer said. “These next couple of days, there will be more. I know on my end here, I see a lot of new faces signed up that haven’t participated in the past. We’ll have to see this year what it brings and talk to the players and get the feedback from them. The numbers haven’t been great the last two years, and this is just a trial to see what people think and what they want to do moving forward.”

Former Columbus North and Tusculum University golfer Coleman Glick is the defending champion, but is working this weekend and will be unable to defend his title. Glick won for the fourth time last year, tying Mike David and current PGA professional golfer Tyler Duncan for the most all-time.
