Wilson reaches semifinals in Midwest Open tourney

Top-seeded Kathryn Wilson is in the final four of the Midwest Open Girls 18-and-under championship after winning a pair of matches again on Sunday.

Wilson, who won the state singles championship as a junior at Columbus North last month, won her Round of 16 match by injury default, then beat No. 10-seed Varsha Vedula of Cary, North Carolina, 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals. She had opened with two easy wins on Saturday.

Wilson plays No. 5-seed Nia Cooper of Chicago in the semifinals at 8 a.m. today at North. No. 4-seed Yenna Park of Okemos, Michigan, plays No. 2-seed Sakurako Watanabe of Edgewood, Kentucky, in the other semifinal.

The championship match likely will begin around 11 or 11:30 a.m.
