PAU will present “Interoculus” at Washington and Fourth Streets, in canopy form to revitalize the downtown in both day and night.
COLUMBUS, Ind. — Exhibit Columbus’ fourth season of highlighting anew the city’s Modernist architectural legacy will kick off with a 450-seat, ticketed, awards-style gala Aug. 25 and a free outdoor street party called “Rock the Block” Aug. 26 downtown as the centerpiece celebrations.
The weekend also includes an Aug. 26 morning walking tour of the 13 temporary, constructed installations that interact, echo or enhance some element of well-known, nearby, existing architecture. And the afternoon will feature a discussion at First Christian Church with Exhibit Columbus’ curatorial team.
The exhibition, “Public By Design,” runs through Nov. 26.
For the opening night, gone is the extensive, 700-person outdoor Mill Race Park tent party of the three previous openings in 2017, 2019 and 2021. Organizers acknowledged that the heat and humidity and other factors moved them to change the opening night dinner scheduled with Indianapolis’ Kahn’s Catering, recognizing architects and live music with Indianapolis’ The Band Etc. and other, smaller acts.
And planners pointed out that Saturday’s 7 p.m. gathering at Fourth and Washington streets, partly under an illuminated canopy for the Practice for Architecture and Urbanism Miller Prize installation “Interoculous,” will also include an open Commons for people to mill about or cool off if necessary.
“Part of our reason for the move to The Commons is that we’re going to able to do a lot more with entertainment,” said Richard McCoy, executive director of the nonprofit Landmark Columbus Foundation that operates Exhibit Columbus. “Our effort and intent all along is to make this one of the best parties in the state.”
