Flat Rock-Hawcreek students return for new school year

Mike Wolanin | The Republic Students arrive for the first day of classes at Hope Elementary in Hope, Ind., Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2023.

HOPE –Students at Flat Rock-Hawcreek School Corp. returned to class Tuesday.

Hauser Jr.-Sr. High School sophomore Kaysie Kistler is looking forward to getting acquainted with exchange students, resuming school sports, and enrolling in more classes she wants to take, rather than required courses.

“Summer flew by, but it was good,” Kistler said. “Full of sports and hanging out with friends.”

When Hauser teenagers began arriving shortly before 7:30 a.m., it wasn’t like last year when they were welcomed back by teachers. Instead, they were greeted by members of the Youth Leadership Team, a student group formed to serve as advocates for their peers.

Besides Kistler, junior Leah Cloud is another member of the leadership team. While Cloud said she doesn’t have to worry about taking Advanced Placement (AP) courses this year, she does have quite a bit on her plate during 11th grade.

“I’m taking the nursing course through the C4 (Columbus Area Career Connection) program,” Cloud said. “I also made the cheerleading squad.”

Cloud is also in clubs that include the Student Council and FFA, she said.

“The only thing I hate about coming back to school is having to wake up early, Cloud said.
