Exhibit Columbus preparing to Rock the Block

Bollywood Beats is one of four international groups that will entertain at Exhibit Columbus’ Rock the Block opening weekend street dance Saturday, Aug. 26.

Exhibit Columbus, now well known here for defining and refining a hip groove among architectural aficionados, will introduce a whole new move and groove Aug. 26 downtown.

A wide-ranging street dance will unfold partly under a lighted canopy over Fourth and Washington streets, courtesy of one of 13 installations called “Interoculous” from the design firm Practice for Architecture and Urbanism.

The gathering called Rock the Block from 7 to 10 p.m. is part of the three-month architectural exhibition’s opening weekend. An Aug. 25 ticketed event is a celebration dinner at The Commons at 300 Washington St.

The Aug. 26 street dance will feature cultural performances, a live DJ and dance floor. Beer and wine will be available for purchase for those ages 21 and older. No ticket or registration is required.

Four dance groups offering cultural performances are:

  • Dance Street Studio (swing and salsa)
  • Monja Ninja (Japanese dance)
  • Bollywood Beats (Indian dance)
  • Black Excellence (African American dance)

In addition to this event, the exhibition installations — temporary creations meant in some way to expound upon the city’s existing Modernist structures — will be activated with activities for leisure, entertainment, and connection.

Exhibit Columbus is a program of the nonprofit Landmark Columbus Foundation and an exploration of community, architecture, art and design that activates the modern legacy of Columbus. It creates a cycle of programming that uses this context to convene conversations around innovative ideas, and it commissions site-responsive installations in a free, public exhibition.

This free, community celebration is made possible in part by the Rock the Block planning and support committee: co-chairs, Sarla Kalsi and Alice Johnson, and planning members, Laura Miller, Annie Johnson, and Ike and Kelsey DeClue.

The Heritage Fund — the Community Foundation of Bartholomew County and the City of Columbus are providing support for the gathering.
