Driver accused of OWI in State Road 11 arrest

A local man was arrested early Tuesday morning for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and other alcohol-related charges after CPD officers observed him driving at speeds near 100 miles per hour.

Shortly after midnight, a CPD supervisor observed a white passenger car traveling south on State Road 11 at an extreme high rate of speed, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. The officer was eventually able to stop the vehicle near the intersection of State Road 11 and Spear Road.

Police said the driver of the vehicle, Evan W. Taylor, 19, of 815 Hutchins Ave., Columbus, had slurred speech and difficulty maintaining his balance. Taylor failed multiple field sobriety tests at the scene and later provided a breath sample of .16% Br.A.C., which is twice the legal limit. Taylor was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded on the following preliminary charges:

  • Operating a vehicle while intoxicated (endangerment)
  • Operating a vehicle with a breath alcohol level of .15% or greater
  • Illegal consumption of an alcoholic beverage

Taylor was being held at the Bartholomew County Jail in lieu of $5,000 bond, jail officials said.
