HOPE — For two-thirds of Monday’s soccer game, Hauser held Class A No. 8 Oldenburg Academy off the scoreboard.
Unfortunately for the Jets, the Twisters put in two goals back-to-back, then added a third one to come away with a 3-0 victory on the Jets’ home field.
“I was glad that our defense held tight for a little while,” Hauser coach Barry Grimes said. “We still need to work on some things. We still had a few mistakes that don’t allow us to put offensive pressure on teams.”
Although Oldenburg outshot Hauser 14-2, including 6-1 on goal, in the first half, neither team had a great scoring opportunity. The Jets (0-4) had the first dangerous chance in the second half when Zach Weichman’s free kick from 25 yards was smothered by the Twisters keeper in the 52nd minute.
Oldenburg had a counter attack, byt Hayden Blair put one wide right on a 1v1 with Hauser keeper Luke Bruner. Then after the Jets had a corner kick opportunity, the Twisters countered again, but Bruner came up with a save on a 1v1 with Blair.
Oldenburg finally broke through in the 55th minute when Zachary Hoff scored, then added another goal a minute later from Jacob Cornelius. Jacob Herbert finished off the scoring in the 68th minute.
The Twisters finished with a 27-4 shot advantage, putting 10 shots on goal to two for Hauser. Bruner recorded seven saves.
“We played with a little bit more heart and passion than we have been,” Grimes said. “We just kind of held strong instead of giving up. We’re starting to fill a big void in our midfield, and that’s getting tighter. We just have to figure out how to string some offense.”
The game was the first of four this week for the Jets. They will travel to Indianapolis Lutheran today, Trinity Lutheran on Thursday at Providence Cristo Rey and Saturday.
