Market doesn’t need ‘Anonymous’ group

I am both concerned and offended by a group possibly known as “Anonymous” that has been present at the Columbus Farmers Market the past several Saturdays. I am sure many have noticed them.

This organized group makes their presence known by standing in the walkways blocking people passing by and attempting to engage in conversations. They wear masks to conceal their identity and have computer screens on their chests showing offensive images of animals being killed. If you are in their path, there is no way to avoid them.

The market is a family-friendly event and has in many ways become a social event. Parents come with their children and pets. Grandparents, aunts and uncles attend. Families come for breakfast, to listen to a little local music, to shop, to socialize and so much more.

“Anonymous” does not have a booth, nor would they qualify for a booth as they offer nothing but intimidation. Last week, they chose a location near a children’s art vendor and a pork booth. Would you want your child to witness this?

The police came, when called, but did nothing to restrain or remove this group. At the very least, I would think that blocking the walking pathway is a fire code violation.

It is a total shame and lack of respect for the vendors who work so hard to provide goods and services showcased at the market. Additionally, it is a shame and lack of respect to those that patronize the market — supporting locally known and based vendors. The scare tactics of “Anonymous” are offensive, disruptive and traumatizing to many.

If you are offended by this group as well, please let your voice be heard. Call your city councilmen, county commissioners, the mayor’s office and the police chief. It’s time for action.
