Destyni Jones: JCHS students look forward to road work completion

Within the next few weeks Jennings County’s construction on US 50 should be finished.

After nearly 17 months of construction and road closures, students of Jennings County schools are relieved to hear that they can get directly to school without bypasses.

Students have been taking different routes in order to get to school every morning, including passing over train tracks, which sometimes leaves students late or waiting for up to an hour.

Student Lauren Halbert said, “I cannot wait until this construction ends. I already drive 30 minutes to and from school and going around the construction takes longer. When this construction is finished it will be a straight shot.”

With the ongoing construction, the road has had officers directing school traffic every morning in order to keep some organization while arriving and leaving the schools.

Student Emily Hall said, “When leaving the school, students can’t turn right out of the parking lot, so it takes a lot longer to leave. It’s inconvenient for anyone who has somewhere to be after school. When it opens up, I expect things to go much smoother and faster before and after school.”

In this last phase of the US 50 work, new blacktop will be finalized up to Dallas Drive, and the west side of town will be again be fully open to traffic in the next two weeks, weather permitting.
