Services and studies

Alongsider Church — Alongsider is a community of house churches coming together to worship as one body on the first and third Sundays monthly at 9:30 a.m. The church meets in the cafeteria at WD Richards Elementary School. Park in the back by the tennis courts and enter through door 24. On the second and fourth Sundays, house churches meet in homes across Columbus for a conversational study of the past sermon and deeper fellowship.

Asbury United Methodist Church — Asbury offers a traditional service at 8:45 a.m. and a contemporary service at 11 a.m. Nursery is available for both services. J.A.M. (children’s church) is offered only at the 11 a.m. service. Sunday school classes meet at 10 a.m. Asbury offers a variety of classes and group studies at various times during the week. Columbus Baptist Church — The church offers worship services on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. A teen service is offered at 6:30 p.m. Sunday school for all ages meets at 9:30 a.m.

Wednesday Bible study, Kids Club and teens meet at 6:30 p.m. There are various small group events weekly.

East Columbus Christian Church — East Columbus Christian Church is open for in-person worship on Sunday mornings with a blended worship service at 10 a.m. The church also has online worship available through Facebook and YouTube.

Sunday morning Bible study is at 9 a.m. Youth meet at the church from 6 to 7:30 p.m., and children’s ministry meets through Zoom on Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

East Columbus United Methodist Church — Sunday morning worship service begins at 9 a.m. The morning blended worship service includes praise music and traditional hymns. Children receive a special message during children’s moment and are dismissed for children’s church during the service. Sunday school begins at 10:10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. Holy Communion is served on the first Sunday of each month.

A free hot meal will be served the second Sunday of each month at 5 p.m. in the Youth Center Building. All are welcome to come.

Women’s Bible study is the third Tuesday of each month at 1 p.m.

Faith Lutheran Church — Worship each Sunday begins at 9 a.m. in-person and livestreamed on the church’s Facebook page. Most Sundays, Sunday school and an adult Bible study are offered from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Wednesday evening worship is offered at 6:30 p.m. each week.

Preschool classes continue throughout the school year and the congregation offers an afterschool program each school day from 3 to 6 p.m. with busing from Southside Elementary.

First Lutheran Church — The church offers in-person worship on Sunday mornings at 8:45 a.m. for the classic service and 11:15 a.m. for the casual service. Livestreaming of both services can be accessed on the church’s YouTube page.

First Presbyterian Church — The church celebrates and welcomes back Pastor Felipe Martinez from his sabbatical adventure. His sermon will be based on Matthew 18:1-7 and will be titled “Become Like Children.” After worship, a congregational meal with a couple of food trucks in the church parking lot will celebrate Felipe’s return.

People in the community in need of a meal are invited to hot meals offered Fridays at 5 p.m. (Please enter through the glass doors on Franklin Street.) The church is LGBTQ-friendly, open and affirming to all.

First United Methodist Church — On Sunday, Sept. 10, at 10 a.m., the Rev. Harriet Wilkin will deliver the message, “Love Honorably.” The scripture will be Romans 13:8-10. The church encourages those attending in person to arrive 10 minutes before the service. Childcare will be available from 9:45 a.m. until the end of the 10 a.m. service. An adult Sunday school class and Sunday school for children ages 4-12 will start at 9 a.m.

For those unable to attend the in-person service or not yet comfortable meeting in person, service livestreams will be available on the church Facebook page and the church YouTube channel (FUMC Columbus). Videos will be available on the church website for later viewing as well.

Flintwood Wesleyan Church — Sunday morning worship begins at 9 a.m. with the amplify (contemporary) service. Sunday school begins at 10 a.m. with classes for all age groups. The well (traditional) service begins at 11 a.m. Both worship services are led by Pastor Wesley Jones. The church’s Sunday amplify services are livestreamed on Facebook and YouTube.

Wednesday activities begin with a meal served at 5:30 p.m. in the friendship center. The iKids program begins at 6:15 p.m., and youth meet downstairs in the sanctuary at 6:30 p.m. Prayer team meets in the prayer room downstairs in the main building at 6:15 p.m., and adult Bible study meets at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Garden City Christian Church — Sunday school classes are available for infants through adults at 9 a.m. Join the church for a blended worship service with lead pastor Brain Gilroy on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.

Nursery, preschool, and children’s church (K-fifth grade) are also offered at 10 a.m. Youth group (grades 6-12) meets weekly on Wednesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. with intern Josiah Been.

Grace Lutheran Church — The church hosts Sunday worship services at 8 and 10:30 a.m. in person and livestreamed at gracecolumbus.org. Sunday school for all ages is at 9:30 a.m.

On Saturday, Sept. 30, Lutheran Heritage Rev. Dr. Gregory Seltz will be speaking and will employ insights from the biblical book of Esther to our lives as citizens today. A potluck dinner will be at 5:30 p.m., the keynote will begin at 6:15 p.m., and questions and discussion will begin at 7:30 p.m. The evening is open to all in our community. Mount Pleasant Christian Union Church — The church invites the community to visit the little 150-year-old country church for a 10:30 a.m. Sunday service. The church preaches out of the King James Bible and sings out of hymn books. The church’s doors are open for visitors as the church family looks to grow.

Newbern United Methodist Church — The church is practicing strict COVID-19 preventative measures. Masks are required. All activities are postponed until further notice except for Sunday service at 10:30 a.m. and online Bible study each Wednesday at 7 p.m. via Zoom.

Old Union United Church of Christ — Pastor Ed Boston is leading worship and sharing messages that encourage firm foundations of faith in Jesus. Simple church — simply Jesus.

Petersville United Methodist Church — On Sept. 10, Pastor Rebecca Milne will bring Sunday morning’s message at the 9 a.m. worship service. Kathy Bush will serve as song and worship leader, and Teresa Covert will give the children’s message. The service will be available on Facebook on Sunday afternoon and through the week.

A time of fellowship and refreshments will follow the service.

Sandy Hook United Methodist Church — Sandy Hook United Methodist Church gathers weekly for in-person and online worship. The church will offer one combined service at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10. Pastor Paul Dazet will bring a message about “Learning to Let Go” as part of the sermon series, “Drop the Stones!”

Sunday school is offered for all ages now from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Nursery is available for children 3 and younger from 9:30 a.m. through the end of the service.

Every Wednesday through Oct. 4, the church will offer “Discover Your Calling,” a Bible study led by Dazet. Call the church office for the name of book needed and to register.

St. Paul Lutheran Church — Pastor Doug Bauman will present the message “Who is the Greatest” based on Matthew 18:1-20 Sunday at the 8 and 10:45 a.m. services.

Christian fellowship begins at 9:10 a.m. with Christian education classes for all ages beginning at 9:30 a.m. During the adult Bible hour, Deaconess Taylor Fickenscher will lead a class entitled, “Missiology from Jonah to Today” in the Conference Room, and Bauman will lead a discussion, “Connected to Christ in Worship”, in the Fellowship Room. Pastor Dan Fickenscher will lead the Spanish worship service in the fellowship room at 10:45 a.m. followed by Spanish Bible study at 12:15 p.m.

Radio worship service is every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., and The Lutheran Hour is every Sunday at 7 p.m., both on WYGS 91.1 FM.

Wednesday adult Bible classes meet in the Fellowship Room at 9 a.m. studying the Book of Acts, and at 6 p.m. studying First and Second Peter.

Freetown Church of Christ — Freetown Church of Christ is so excited to announce “Seniors Day” 2023 on Thursday, Oct. 6. Seniors Day 2023 promises to be filled with singing, preaching, fellowship, great food, rekindling of old friendships, making new friends and so much more.

Registration with donuts and coffee begins at 8:30 a.m. The day will end by 3 p.m. The cost, which covers the catered lunch by The Pines, will be $15.

The theme for the day will be “God and Country” with a focus on The Father, Son and Holy Ghost, the freedoms we share here in America, and the freedom we have in Christ!

Second Baptist Church — Second Baptist Church is hosting a Women’s Tea on Oct. 7 from 1 to 3 p.m. The Women’s Tea is set to be an engaging and uplifting experience for women of all ages, backgrounds, and faiths. Attendees can look forward to an afternoon of heartfelt conversations, inspiring discussions, and a warm cup of tea. The event will feature guest speakers, interactive sessions, and an opportunity for attendees to connect and forge meaningful relationships. Solid Rock Community Church — The Solid Rock Community Church will host a Gospel Concert on Saturday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. featuring The Singing Cookes and The Cooke Brothers from Kingsport, Tennessee. St. John’s Lutheran Church — White Creek annual fall dinner will be Saturday, Sept. 9. This year will be carryout only with the drive thru from 4 to 7 p.m.

The menu will include baked ham or turkey, sage dressing, real mashed potatoes and gravy, homemade noodles, green beans, home grown corn, pumpkin pie, apple pie, cherry pie, chocolate pie, sugar cream pie, and pudding dessert.
