Destyni Jones: Students’ stories inspire youngsters

For a week now, students from Kelly Warren’s creative writing class at Jennings County High School have been preparing to read their self-created children’s books to young kids at North Vernon Elementary School.

The upperclassman had been writing stories that had great lessons that they think would inspire younger students to do something beneficial. Lessons covered everything from bullying, differences in people, believing in yourself, and even never giving up on what you want to do.

Senior Alexis Carson wrote a book about her goals as a child and how she achieved them as she got older. She explains that as a child she had always had the thought of firefighting, and now 10 years down the road, she stayed consistent and kept trying and succeeded. She is now a firefighter at Westport Community Volunteer Fire Department.

Carson said, “Writing this book gave me the opportunity to inspire younger children to chase their dreams even if others don’t believe it’s possible. There is no better feeling than achieving a dream while proving so many people wrong.”

Being able to voice these lessons to younger children early in their lives truly will help children live by these amazing guidelines. The high school students were absolutely proud of themselves and glad to be able to put out their own stories for children to live by.
