CPD arrests suspect after early-morning chase

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man with two Bartholomew County warrants for his arrest was taken into custody after he attempted to flee from Columbus police officers earlier this morning.

At approximately 2:50 a.m., CPD officers attempted to stop a man riding a bicycle near Eighth Street and Union Street. The man, later identified as Manuel Torres, 32, of Columbus, jumped off of the bicycle a short time later and began running in a nearby alley, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The officers ordered Torres several times to stop running, however, he refused to do so. During the foot chase, Torres appeared to be reaching in the waistband of his shorts and officers discharged a Taser to assist in taking him into custody. Torres was placed under arrest and the officers determined that he had two Bartholomew County warrants for his arrest. Torres was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and was remanded a short time later at the Bartholomew County Jail
on the following preliminary charges:
— Felony Bartholomew County Warrant
— Misdemeanor Bartholomew County Warrant
— Resisting Law Enforcement
