COLUMBUS
Julie Vonne (Young) Kain, 70, of Columbus, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2023, at Our Hospice.
Born February 23, 1953, in Columbus, IN, she was the daughter of James “Bud” W. Young of Gary, IN and Lois Virginia Hazard Young of Reddington, IN, who precede her in death. Julie graduated from Columbus High School in 1971. Before retiring, Julie worked for Cummins Inc. for over 30 years, mostly in sales and marketing.
After traveling across the U.S. as a child, her parents returned to settle down in Columbus where she enjoyed riding and showing quarter horses. In her early years, she played guitar and enjoyed singing in a band, including opening for Mel Tillis. She had a love for music, dancing, and was known for her spunk and competitive spirit. She loved fishing and attending her children’s sporting events and music competitions. Words cannot describe her pride and dedication to being “Nana” to her six beloved grandchildren. On most days, you could find Julie attending her grandchildren’s numerous sporting events or activities, usually in the front row or on the sidelines fiercely cheering them on, always wearing her favorite team shirt.
She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Y. Kain (Tom) Rager of Columbus, IN; son, Jason (Emily) Kain of Columbus, IN; brother, Kerry W. Young of Elizabethtown, IN; grandchildren, Blake, Lyla and Adycin Rager of Columbus, and Otto, Charlotte and Caroline Kain, of Columbus and her former husband, Jon Kain (Libby Forbes).
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service Sunday at the funeral home. In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place after the funeral service.
