DeVoe

A few entertainment suggestions from the area’s activities calendar.

1) Singer Jennie DeVoe, pictured here, has long been a favorite of area audiences since the days of NeighborFest and beyond. How can you not love the artist who gave us the 2000 jazz classic “Don’t Forget to Breathe”? I just listened to a tune “Here On Earth” on her latest release “Fireworks and Karate Supplies,” and you know the woman still sings with such soul and passion that I could listen to her with absolutely no backing band and still be enthralled. She brings her music at 7:30 p.m. Friday to Brown County Playhouse, 51 N. Van Buren St. in Nashville. Tickets are $15 for an artist worth much more. Information: browncountyplayhouse.org.

2) Mark your calendar early: Sax player Rob Dixon, known as the Mayor of Jazz, is the next artist, along with his quartet, in the Columbus Indiana Philharmonic’s Jazz at Helen’s series at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 27-28 at Helen Haddad Hall, 315 Franklin St. in downtown Columbus. Organizer Warren Ward has gone out of his way to bring in some of the Midwest’s finest artists for this expanded series to offer an overlooked genre locally. Information: the cip.org.

3) The free Bartholomew County Public Library Plaza concerts return at 6 p.m. Friday at 536 Fifth St. in downtown Columbus when The Jokers band plays a mix of blues and classic rock hits. Organizers encourage attendees to bring chairs, snacks “and dancing shoes,” as online promos mention. Some of the concerts in the series have attracted serious-sized crowds. Information: mybcpl.org.
