‘Rocky Horror’ at Crump

Organizers are calling it “a night of wild, wacky, and utterly unforgettable entertainment.”

What else can you say when a local group books not only the 1975 cult classic film “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” for the newly opened Crump Theatre in downtown Columbus, but plans a simultaneous shadowcast performance of the flick on the stage in front of the movie?

Listen to Brandon Gearriess offer an overview of the event at 8 p.m. Saturday at 425 Third St.

“Get ready to step out of your comfort zone, and enter the twisted world of (lead characters) Dr. Frank-N-Furter, Rocky, and the rest of the delightfully eccentric characters from the film,” he has said in promotional posts. “This is not your average night at the movies; it’s a full-blown, interactive, and outrageously fun experience that you won’t want to miss. … So, come join us for a night of absolute mayhem, singing, and dancing.”

A portion of all ticket sales will go directly to helping the restoration and maintainers of the Crump, still being repaired and renewed.

Tickets are available for $14.26, including tax and fees, at rosetintcolumbus.com, which is the website for “passionate ‘Rocky Horror Picture Show’ fans who have previously performed across the country,” as an online note says.

Here’s the film’s summary: Sweethearts Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon), stuck with a flat tire during a storm, discover the eerie mansion of Dr. Frank-N-Furter (Tim Curry), a transvestite scientist. As their innocence is lost, Brad and Janet meet a houseful of wild characters.

“There will be survival kits being sold so that the audience can throw rice during the wedding scene and rolls of toilet paper to be thrown when Dr. Scott comes onscreen,” Gearriess said. “There will be audience callback lines that happen also and those mostly just depend on who knows lines or wants to make up new ones and throw them out there to see if they gain traction at future shows.

“We also have it set up so that (the character of) Eddie will ride out into the audience on his ‘motorcycle,’ which will be a little scooter we just picked up and several other little personal spins we have came up with due to our particular layout at the Crump.”
