William “Bill” A. Helmbrecht

William “Bill” A. Helmbrecht, 76, of Columbus, passed away at 8:45 a.m. Thursday, October 19. 2023 at his home surrounded by family.

Bill was born October 19, 1947, in Seymour, Indiana, the son of Harold William and Sue Catherine Moss Helmbrecht. He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryln.

Mr. Helmbrecht graduated from Seymour High School in 1966 and then joined the United States Army for three years. After his tour of duty, he attended Indiana State University where he graduated with a degree in business management. From there, he started his career in banking. After moving to Columbus in 1976, he went to work at First National Bank in the trust department, working with trusts and estates. In 1989 he joined Irwin Union Bank (now First Financial Bank) continuing to work in the trust department. He was active in the community and served on many committees and boards. Most recently he served as president of the Custer Foundation and Nugent Foundation. He was also a member of the Investment Committee of the Heritage Fund. In addition, he was a member of the American Legion, Moose and was on the Board of Directors of the Elks.

Survivors include his children, Stephanie (Brian) Rawlings of Columbus, Matthew (Tracie) Helmbrecht of Indianapolis; stepchildren, Eric (Liz) Jones of Scottsburg, Beth Ann (Dustin) Keith of Austin, Indiana; grandchildren, Claire Rawlings, Nate Rawlings, Emery and Chloe Helmbrecht; step-grandchildren, Landon Keith, Gavin Jones, Dylan Jones; brother, Joe (Shezel) Helmbrecht; niece, Heather Helmbrecht and Nephew, BJ Helmbrecht.

In keeping with the family’s request, cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday at Barkes, Weaver &Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Pastor Brent Calloway officiating. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Military honors will be presented at the beginning of the service Thursday by the Bartholomew Veterans Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana.
