Time to vote: City’s registered voters head to the polls to elect mayor, clerk and city council candidates

Mike Wolanin | The Republic Voters check in on the last day of early voting at NexusPark in Columbus, Ind., Monday, Nov. 6, 2023.

Today is the city election in Columbus, with more than 30,000 registered voters eligible to vote.

Only Columbus city residents are eligible to vote in this election.

Offices on the ballot are Columbus mayor, city council races and the city clerk race.

According to the Indiana Voter Portal, voters must bring a government-issued photo ID when arriving at the vote center. That can be a BMV-issued ID, driver’s license or passport.

There are 30,598 registered voters in the city of Columbus, said Bartholomew County Election Administrator Taylor Seegraves. In the 2019 general election, 7,306 out of 29,633 registered voters cast votes — just under 25%.

As of 3:45 p.m. Monday, 2,877 people had voted in person, and 375 absentee-by-mail ballots had been turned in to the voter registration office, Seegraves said. Additionally, there are 76 mail ballots they have not yet received back.

Voting centers, which are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. today, are:

  • Flintwood Wesleyan Church, 5300 25th St., Columbus
  • St. John’s Masonic Lodge, 4131 Rocky Ford Road, Columbus
  • NexusPark, 2288 25th St., Columbus
  • Donner Center, 739 22nd St., Columbus
  • River of Living Water Christian Church, 51 N. Brooks St., Columbus
  • Bartholomew County Governmental Office Building, 440 Third St., Columbus
  • Terrace Lake Church, 4260 W. County Road 200S, Columbus
  • Westside Community Church, 124 Tipton Lakes Blvd., Columbus

According to Seegraves, individuals who select a straight ticket at the polls will need to select their candidates for city council at-large manually.

“With the at-large races, if you vote straight party, it will not select the at-large race,” she said. “You would have to select those individually.”

Additionally, she said that absentee-by-mail ballots must be turned into the voter registration office, which is located in the Bartholomew County Courthouse at 234 Washington St., by 6 p.m. today.
