HOPE — After starting the season 2-5, Hauser girls basketball coach Kyle Shipp stressed the importance of getting off to a good start in Tuesday night’s game against Columbus Christian.

The Jets did exactly that. They jumped out to a 17-0 lead after one quarter and went on to post a 62-17 victory on senior night.

“We got off to a good start offensively and defensively, and that’s one of the things that we’ve been really harping on — starting better,” Shipp said. “So I thought it was a nice night for everybody.”

The Crusaders (0-5), who started two sophomores, two freshmen and an eighth grader, scored all of their points in the second and fourth quarters.

“Finally, it’s like it slowed down a little bit,” Columbus Christian coach Chris Noblitt said. “(Hauser is) a good team, but I was definitely a little more pleased in the second and fourth than the first and third. We didn’t adjust well to what they did. It was just a lot of, to put it bluntly, sloppy basketball. We couldn’t get shots up.”

Norah Berkenstock led the Jets (3-5) with 16 points, while senior Mattie Foster had career-highs of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Bella Kilps scored nine points, and Braelyn Williams added eight.

“I’m really happy that our hard work in practice finally started to show off,” Foster said. “I think we played really well together. It was a good win on the court, and I’m super pumped.”

Emma Murray led the Crusaders with 11 points and seven rebounds. Olivia Wise scored their other six points.

“You can definitely learn from games like this,” Noblitt said. “It’s going to push the girls to be stronger with the basketball and take good shots and all that. There’s a lot we can get better at, and we talked about it after the game”
