Franklin student places second

INDIANAPOLIS — A Franklin College student placed second in the 37th annual Indianapolis Press Club Foundation’s Thomas R. Keating Feature Writing Competition. Sophomore Erin Bruce, a multimedia and sports communications journalism student from Troy, Ohio, placed second in the competition.

The annual writing contest, sponsored by the Lumina Foundation and Lilly Endowment Inc., attracts students from colleges and universities across the state. Student finalists were invited to attend an informal dinner in Indianapolis to meet one another and receive advice from seasoned journalists. Students were then given their assignment and competed for honors and the $3,000 prize money. The foundation provided meals and hotel accommodations.

The finalists were challenged to find an ordinary person with an inspiring story. The goal of the assignment was to share the humanity of Indianapolis through its residents.

The students had five hours to interview, write and construct a well-written story. Bruce wrote a compelling story about a woman using her love of art to navigate sobriety. After the competition all the finalists were invited to an awards banquet in downtown Indianapolis.

This is the sixth consecutive year that Franklin College has been represented among the finalists, as well as the sixth year Franklin College students have placed in the top three.

Keating, a popular former Indianapolis Star columnist and Lilly Endowment Inc. executive, is the inspiration behind the contest. He died in 1985 at the age of 45. The Lilly Endowment underwrites a portion of the competition each year, which, since its inception in 1986, has awarded nearly $200,000 to college and university students in Indiana.

IU offers new master’s degree

BLOOMINGTON — The Indiana University Kelley School of Business is offering a new residential master’s degree for recent college graduates who want to add management skills to their undergraduate education.

Kelley’s new Master of Science in Management degree is designed to enable any student — including those who studied the humanities, sciences, music, the arts, public health or other business-adjacent fields — to build upon their undergraduate degree knowledge through courses which emphasize business acumen and tangible business experience needed to advance in their career.

The degree at IU Bloomington can be completed in less than a year. Graduates gain a competitive advantage in the job market, accelerated progression to jumpstart their careers, and access to one of the world’s largest business school alumni networks.

The Master of Science in Management is 30 credits (over 10 months) for current Kelley students, including those minoring in business, and 36 credits (over 12 months) for non-Kelley students, who are required to take a 6-credit Business Foundations course.

Students can tailor their degree to fit to their unique career interests. Students can choose to study general management or select from one of three paths: strategy, leadership and human resources, or entrepreneurship.

In addition to the hands-on, real-world core coursework of this program, students can select from electives that will allow them to explore further other functional areas of business, including accounting, economics, finance, operations, and marketing. Their management courses will feature in-depth studies of organizational behavior, venture strategy, and creating diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations.

The application deadline for the inaugural class is March 1 for non-IU Bloomington graduates and March 15 for IU Bloomington students.
