‘Tis the season for celebrity cooking shows and entertaining tips. Time was, viewers looked to experts like Martha Stewart to make them feel inadequate about their decorations. Now IFC and AMC+ invite us to “In the Kitchen With Harry Hamlin” (11 p.m., IFC).
The star of “Mayfair Witches” obsesses about his prized Bolognese sauce and makes a beef bourguignon along with his wife, Lisa Rinna (“Melrose Place”), and his niece, classically trained chef Renee Guilbault, along with son Dimitri and daughter Delilah.
And saxophonist Kenny G shows up for a few tunes as well.
Hamlin can also be seen in the series “L.A. Law,” now streaming in its entirety on Hulu. No stranger to the AMC family, he was nominated for an Emmy for his role as advertising executive Jim Cutler in “Mad Men.”
— Hulu will stream the South Korean supernatural thriller “Moving,” now with an English-language translation. A tale of teens adjusting to their newly discovered superpowers, it was a hit in South Korea for Disney+, quickly becoming the most-streamed series on that platform.
— Now streaming on Netflix, the documentary series “Under Pressure: The U.S. Women’s World Cup Team” follows the most decorated women’s team in the world as they prepare for and compete in the 2023 FIFA World Cup. Look for interviews with players and coaches as they discuss their inspirations and the champions who came before them.
— Proof that Harry Hamlin has no monopoly on holiday entertaining, Netflix imports “I Hate Christmas,” a holiday romantic comedy series from Italy about a woman’s preparation of a Christmas Eve feast to woo back the man who broke her heart.
— TCM continues its monthlong salute to movies written by Paddy Chayefsky (1923-81). A pivotal part of the 1950s Golden Age of television dramas, he won a 1955 Oscar for adapting his own teleplay for “Marty” to the big screen.
Tonight’s films focus on his final works, including “Network” (8 p.m., TV-MA), his Oscar-winning and decidedly over-the-top 1976 satire of broadcast television, a film that has long been considered a prescient classic.
The irreverent 1970 drama “The Hospital” (10:15 p.m., TV-MA) earned Chayefsky another Oscar, and it was also considered prophetic for its depiction of the chaos of urban health care. In many ways, its blend of personal drama (George C. Scott’s suicidal surgeon) and semi-comic sexual politics pointed to the sprawling medical dramas (“ER,” “Grey’s Anatomy”) that would dominate prime time in decades to come.
Look for Chayefsky’s final film, “Altered States” (2:30 a.m.). A blend of his gonzo writing style and “Tommy” director Ken Russell’s rococo excesses, it stars William Hurt as a respected psychologist who reverts to primal visions and prehistoric memories while immersed in an isolation tank.
Arguably the most influential and distinctive voice in movies and television for three decades, Chayefsky won three Oscars and savored his reputation for difficulty. Biographer Dave Itzkoff titled his book, “Mad as Hell: The Making of Network and the Fateful Vision of the Angriest Man in Movies.”
