Gray is now a Red: East grad signs with Cincinnati

Peyton Gray

Peyton Gray’s journey, which has most recently taken him to Mexico, took another turn Thursday when he signed with the Cincinnati Reds.

The 2014 Columbus East graduate was invited to the Reds’ Top Prospect Camp on Feb. 12 in Goodyear, Arizona. He will then stay there for Spring Training when pitchers and catchers report later that week.

The 28-year-old right-hander has spent the past two fall seasons playing in the Mexican Pacific Winter League. He was pitching for Algodoneros de Guasave until signing with the Reds and returning to his home in Fort Myers, Florida.

Gray, who finished his college career at Florida Gulf Coast in 2018, signed as a free agent with the Colorado Rockies and played in their minor league system until being released in February 2020 and signed with the Kansas City Royals in September of that year. He played in the minor leagues with the Royals until he underwent Tommy John Surgery in August 2021 and was released in July 2022.

Gray pitched for the Independent League Milwaukee Milkmen in 2020, 2022 and again this year. He was named the Independent League American Association Relief Pitcher of the Year and Rookie of the Year after going 3-0 with 32 scoreless innings in 2020.
