Scattered to numerous snow showers are expected to develop Monday as an Arctic cold front sweeps through the area, Bartholomew County emergency management officials advised Sunday morning.

Falling temperatures and strong wind gusts of 35-40 mph are expected to accompany snow showers and may allow for the development of snow squalls. These brief but intense bursts of snow accompanied by strong, gusty winds can create areas of near-whiteout visibility and rapidly deteriorating road conditions, which can quickly cause development of hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service forecast falling temperatures Monday, with patchy blowing snow between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Temperatures will to around 31 degrees by 5 p.m. New snow accumulation of less than a half-inch is possible.

Conditions are expected to clear and turn colder Monday night, with a low around 20. West-northwest winds of 11 to 18 mph, and gusts as high as 29 mph, could cause wind-chill readings in the single digits.

Even outside of squalls, snow showers and strong winds may cause spotty travel difficulties on Monday, particularly for high profile vehicles, officials said.

Those planning to travel across central Indiana on Monday should monitor forecasts, and be prepared for rapidly changing travel conditions.
