- Musical comic Tim Cavanagh is singing to old friends anytime he returns to Columbus, as he will do for an 8 p.m. Sunday show at YES Cinema, 326 Jackson St. downtown. Local audiences are more than familiar with his appearances on the nationally syndicated “Bob and Tom Show,” including one days ago in which he plugged this New Year’s Eve show. He expects to bring some new tunes, such as “Neutering,” and that the music that he’s known for will constitute maybe 35 percent of the act. At press time, tickets were still available for $25 at yescinema.org.
- Seeking more family-oriented, alcohol-free revelry? You can ring in the new year and welcome 2024 at the Indiana State Museum, 650 N. Washington St. in downtown Indianapolis, with music, a dance party and more, according to the website promotional blurb at https://www.indianamuseum.org/programs/family-new-years-eve. Here’s more from the site: “Explore all three levels of the museum and visit activity stations in the galleries. Strike a pose at one of the photo ops, get your face painted and so much more. End the night with a balloon drop and countdown celebration at 8:30 p.m.” Price: $18/person (ages 3 and older), 25% discount for members, $8/Access Pass members, free for children younger than age 3.
- Looking ahead on the calendar: Forget the old ice bucket challenge. If you really aim to have fun and chill, make plans to stop by the Polar Plunge set from 1 to 5 p.m. Jan. 6 on Fourth Street in downtown Columbus. The event, which will include one of my favorite docs, is a fundraiser for the girl’s locker room at Hamilton Community Center and Ice Arena. Promos for the gathering say that local businesses will be part of the party, opening up their doors to provide food, drink and entertainment (and warming stations) for the plungers and onlookers.
