Wayne County Republican files to run for Sixth District seat

A Wayne County Republican has filed paperwork to run for Indiana’s 6trh Congressional District, setting up a two-person race for the GOP nomination.

Darin Childress of Wayne County filed to run for the Republican nomination on Friday, according to the Indiana Election Division. Childress joins state Rep. Mike Speedy, R-Indianapolis, in seeking the GOP nod for the congressional seat.

Democrat Cynthia “Cinde” Wirth has filed to run for the Democratic nomination for the seat and is currently running unopposed in the primary.

The U.S. House seat is open this year after three-term incumbent Rep. Greg Pence, R-Ind., announced that he will not seek reelection.

The district includes parts of Bartholomew, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock counties, southern portions of Indianapolis, among other parts of central and eastern Indiana.

Candidate filing for the May 7 primary runs through Feb. 9.
