BCSC gives timeline for replacing Roberts

Bartholomew Consolidated School Corp. gave the timeline Monday for finding a replacement for Superintendent Jim Roberts, saying they hope to officially vote to hire his replacement by the end of April.

Roberts is leaving his position on July 1 after eight years to become vice president of the Community Education Coalition.

During the short meeting, the board also unanimously approved The University Search Team to help with the search. The group, made up of individuals from Indiana, Ball State, Indiana State and Purdue universities, will help with the logistics of the process. Board President Nicole Wheeldon estimated the team worked with just about 90% of districts in the state on hires.

“They are experts in understanding kind of how this process works. We have full control of the outcomes, so they’re really just there as kind of an execution arm and to give us a head start.”

There will also be a community survey made available online next week so the public can provide input.

Wheeldon said the board hopes to begin formally advertising the position “as early as Friday” continuing through Feb. 23.

“Over that period of time, people will apply because we think we’re a great district. We’re expecting we will have lots of applicants,” she said.

During the week of March 4, the board will meet with the University Search Team again to choose interview questions and talk more about the process.

Following spring break, interviews will begin, Wheeldon detailed.

“We expect those will take at least a few weeks. We’re targeting to be done with that by April 5.”

The contract will also be posted for a period of time, in compliance with a statutory requirement, from April 8 through April 18, Wheeldon said. After that, there will be a public hearing on April 22 and a vote on hiring the superintendent on April 29.

“At a high level, a day or two movement here or there, you know, if things require it, but I think we’ve got a pretty tight timeline and that’s what we’re going to be working towards,” she said.
