Outgoing Sheriff Mark Gorbett was courted by political supporters to run for a variety of political offices, including mayor of Columbus. But in the end, he opted to seek an open seat on the Bartholomew County Council.

1999

A Black history display titled “From Then to Now, Life Experiences in Bartholomew County,” was opened at the Arts in Common Gallery at The Commons. The display was sponsored by the Bartholomew County Historical Society, the Columbus Area Arts Council and the Bartholomew County NAACP.

1974

Columbus resident Kyra Keeney was the first Indiana woman to be accepted for training as a dental specialist with the Army Security Agency. Keeney graduated from Columbus North High School in 1972.
