City contracts with Rumpke to use its transfer station for recycling

The Columbus Board of Public Works on Monday approved a three month contract with Rumpke to use its transfer station for the Columbus Recycles program.

The city’s contract with the previous vendor, Waste Management, expires on Feb. 1. The city sought another vendor because Waste Management is no longer using the site they previously used as a transfer station, Columbus Department of Public Works Director Bryan Burton said.

The department had asked that the term of the contract was for one year, but due to the substantial cost they opted for a three month contract instead, which’ll be paid for using an appropriation of $75,000 to $80,000, Burton said.

“In the meantime we’ve asked Rumpke to come up with a short term— for like a two or three month (contract) just to get us going.”

When public works went through the budgeting process in mid-to-late 2023, Burton had informed city council members that an appropriation was probably going to be requested.

“The place that we had was probably the best deal in the state, probably even outside the state with what we had, but all good things come to an end and we’re there, so we’re going to need more funds.”

Rumpke was the only proposal they received after the board approved a request for proposals on Jan. 9, according to Burton.

The contract will last from Feb. 1 until April 30. After that, Burton said he’ll ask for another appropriation to extend the contract for the remainder of the year.
