Looking Back – Feb. 18

Local actress Charlotte Battin portrays abolitionist Margaret Ella Scott during a one-woman play about the Underground Railroad. The play written by Jan Lucas, “Freedom is My Home,” was presented at the Columbus Learning Center during Black History Month in 2014.

2014

Local nonprofit Community Animal Rescue Effort held their seventh annual fundraiser event to generate money for spaying and neutering, a “spay-ghetti” dinner at Tre Bicchieri. More than 300 people participated in the event, and about $10,000 were raised for the cause.

1999

The national organization “Songs of Love” produced more than 1,100 individually written songs for ill children nationwide. Columbus native John Beltzer started the organization in 1996 in memory of his twin brother, Julio, to cheer up children who needed it the most.

1974

For the first time in Columbus history, three city wrestlers made it to the state finals at Southport. Lester Perkinson of Columbus East High School, and Greg Spicer and Gene Coveney of Columbus North High School each won Indiana High School Athletic Association regional titles in Bloomington.
