Fern Marie Hendershot

Fern Marie Hendershot, age 92, passed away peacefully on February 19, 2024. She was born on January 17, 1932, the daughter of the late Marshall “Doc” and Margaret Sprague. Fern was united in marriage to Roy Basil Hendershot on January 3, 1949, in Nashville, Indiana.

Fern was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Roy Basil; one grandchild, Matthew Dyer; her parents; and other extended family members. She is survived by her six loving children, Edward (Brenda) Hendershot of Nashville, IN, Roy (Mary) Hendershot of Columbus, IN, Betty (Ernie) Dyer of Spencer, IN, Joe (Tina) Hendershot of Nashville, IN, Thomas (Brenda) Hendershot of Kerrville, TX, and Mark (Vicki) Hendershot of Nashville, IN. Fern also leaves behind 18 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and 24 great-great-grandchildren.

She is fondly remembered by her many friends and vast extended family. Fern was a cherished member of Gnaw Bone Wesleyan Church throughout her life, where she served in various roles. Her dedication extended to teaching Sunday school for both youth and adult classes, serving on the church board, and participating in mission trips to Panama, Israel, Alaska, and Native American reservations in the southwest.

Fern and her late husband, Roy, worked side by side as Brown County School bus drivers for 28 years. Her commitment to the community extended beyond her career, touching the lives of countless children.

A devout Christian since her youth, Fern took pride in sharing her faith and inspiration with others. She was known for her passion for gardening, spending hours cultivating a large garden and canning vegetables to provide for her family and share with others. Fern’s green thumb also extended to a beautiful flower garden, where she lovingly arranged fresh-cut bouquets for the church altar every Sunday.

Among her many passions, quilting held a special place in Fern’s heart. She dedicated countless hours designing and stitching quilts for weddings, baby showers, and other special occasions, leaving behind timeless treasures as precious as she was.

Fern Marie Hendershot will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Her legacy of faith, love, and selfless service will continue to inspire generations to come. May she rest in eternal peace.

The funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Gnaw Bone Wesleyan Church with her son Rev. Roy Hendershot officiating.

Family and friends may gather for a time of visitation from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Gnaw Bone Wesleyan Church and 9:00 a.m. to time of service.

She will be laid to rest next to her husband Roy Basil Hendershot at Burkhart Cemetery in Brown County.
