Six arrested on multiple charges after suspicious activity observed at Columbus home

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Six people were arrested on a variety of charges after CPD officers observed suspicious activity at a Columbus home on Monday evening.

At approximately 5:30 p.m., CPD officers were conducting extra patrols near a residence in the 800 block of Wilson Street after receiving reports of suspicious activity in the area. The officers observed a couple of people outside of the home and smelled the strong odor of burnt marijuana when they later spoke to them, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

A short time later, the officers could smell the odor of burnt marijuana inside the home in question when the rear door to the residence was opened. Several people at the residence were detained while officers applied for a search warrant for the home.

After a warrant was obtained, officers and investigators conducted a search of the home and located drug paraphernalia including multiple syringes, digital scales and glass pipes, along with marijuana, and methamphetamine, Harris said. As a result of the investigation, the following people were arrested on the preliminary charges listed below and were remanded to the Bartholomew County Jail with a 48 hour hold:
— Angel L. Abbott, 39, of 1310 Brookside Drive, Columbus: Possession of methamphetamine (Level 5 felony), possession of a narcotic drug (Level 5 felony), possession of a legend drug (three counts) (Level 6 felony), possession of a legend drug injection device (nine counts) (Level 6
felony), Visiting a common nuisance (Class B misdemeanor), possession of a substance represented to be a controlled substance (Class C misdemeanor).
— Tammy F. Schwind, 36, of 1075 Second St.-D, Columbus: Maintaining a common nuisance (Level 6 felony), possession of methamphetamine (Level 6 felony), possession of a legend drug (Level 6 felony), possession of drug paraphernalia, (Class C misdemeanor).
— Jaydon M. Gilmore, 24, of 9610 E. County Road 50N, Columbus: Visiting a common nuisance (Class B misdemeanor).
— Daniel S. Houchens, 32, of 8320 W. Deaver Road, Columbus: Visiting a common nuisance (Class B misdemeanor)
— Demarcis C. Scrogham, 28, 230 N. Hughes St., Columbus: Visiting a common nuisance (Class B misdemeanor)
— Brooks M. Hornbeck, 42, of 1031 Eighth St., Columbus: Possession of methamphetamine (Level 6 felony), visiting a common nuisance (Class B misdemeanor)

The residence was secured by officers and contact was made with City Code Enforcement due to the poor living conditions in the home, Harris said.
