College sports notebook: Sabotin, Rutan earn conference honors

Rachel Sabotin collected plenty of hardware in helping lead Akron to the Mid-American Conference women’s swimming title last weekend at Ohio University.

ATHENS, Ohio — Rachel Sabotin was named to the All-Mid-American Conference first team after helping lead Akron to its 10th MAC women’s swimming championship in 11 years.

Sabotin, a senior Columbus resident and Trinity Lutheran graduate, swam on the Zips’ winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. She also finished second in the 200 butterfly in an NCAA B-Standard 1 minute 57.88 seconds and in the 100 butterfly in a personal-best 52.66. She placed third in the 200 individual medley (1:59.90) and anchored the 800 freestyle relay team to a runner-up finish.

Ball State’s Betsy King, a senior from Columbus North, finished 23rd in the prelims of the 50 freestyle (23.90), 25th in the prelims of the 100 freestyle (52.15) and 33rd in the prelims of the 200 freestyle (1:54.56).

Ohio University’s Olivia Morlok, a senior from North, swam exhibition and finished in 5:02.61 for the 500 freestyle and 17:04.24 for the 1,650 freestyle. Her 1,600 freestyle time would have placed her 11th.

Sabotin will swim in the National Invitational Championship March 14-16 in Ocala, Florida.

Rutan named ASUN Pitcher of Week

RICHMOND, Ky. — Maddi Rutan has been named Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season after leading Eastern Kentucky to a 4-0 record in its Colonel Classic.

Rutan, a freshman from Columbus North, threw a seven-hit shutout in Saturday’s 5-0 win against Purdue Fort Wayne and a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts in Sunday’s 6-0 win against Ball State. She also went 4 for 12 with three RBIs at the plate in the four games over the weekend.

For the season, she is 7-2 with a 1.27 ERA and 43 strikeouts in 55 innings. She had five complete games, four shutouts and one perfect game in 11 appearances.

EKU (10-4) hosts 15th-ranked Virginia Tech on Wednesday.

Cole nets first career hit, homer

BLOOMINGTON — Kaylee Cole’s first collegiate hit was a home run Sunday in Bowling Green’s 5-3 loss to Valparaiso in the first game of a doubleheader at Indiana University.

Foster collects hit at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. — Kenzie Foster, a freshman from Columbus East, went 1 for 1 Saturday in Syracuse’s 7-0 Atlantic Coast Conference loss at Duke.

The Orange (8-9, 0-3) dropped the final two games of the series 6-0 and 3-0. They will play two games in Norfolk, Virginia, on Tuesday.

Norman helps Marian to victories

MELBOURNE, Fla. — Sierra Norman went 1 for 3 with an RBI Monday in Marian’s 10-3 win against Concordia (Michigan).

Norman, a senior from Columbus North, had an RBI in Monday’s second game, a 6-2 win against Calumet.

The Knights (4-0) play two more games Tuesday in Melbourne, Florida.

Lemmons notches hits, runs

Josie Lemmons scored a run in IU Southeast’s 7-4 win against Huntington and went 1 for 1 with two sacrifices and a run in an 8-2 loss to Huntington on Saturday.

On Sunday, Lemmons, a freshman from Columbus North, scored a run in each game in 8-0 and 7-4 wins against IU South Bend.

On Monday, Lemmons went 2 for 3 with a stolen base in a 1-0 loss to Taylor and had a stolen base and a run scored in a 2-1 loss to Taylor.

The Grenadiers (6-9) will host IU Columbus for a doubleheader on Friday.

Sitterding steals base for MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Julia Sitterding had a stolen base and a run scored Friday in Middle Tennessee’s 9-1 win against Detroit Mercy in its MTSU Invitational.

Greenwell, Harrison record hits

MEMPHIS — Julian Greenwell went 5 for 6 with a double, a stolen base, four RBIs and four runs scored Saturday in Wright State’s 13-12 loss at Memphis.

Parker Harrison, a junior from Columbus East, went 1 for 2 with a hit-by-pitch and two runs scored.

On Sunday, Greenwell, a fifth-year senior from East, went 1 for 6 with an RBI and a run in a 17-7 loss at Memphis.

The Raiders (3-7) will host Miami (Ohio) on Wednesday.

McIntosh has big weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — Kyler McIntosh went 3 for 3 with a double, five RBIs and two runs scored Saturday to lead Alabama State to a 17-5 win against Maryland-Eastern Shore.

McIntosh, a sophomore from Columbus North, went 1 for 4 with a run in a 7-5 win in the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. He went 2 for 5 with a double, two RBIs and two runs in Sunday’s 11-5 win against UMES.

The Hornets (6-5) will host UAB on Tuesday.

Harmon collects three hits

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa — Reese Harmon went 3 for 4 with three doubles, six RBIs and two runs scored Sunday to lead Iowa Western to a 16-5 win against Minnesota North-Hibbing.

On Saturday, Harmon, a junior from Columbus North, had an RBI and scored two runs in a 27-0 win against Minnesota North-Hibbing.

Bode smacks pair of hits

East grads play in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. — Tyler Bumbalough went 1 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs and a run scored Monday in Marian Ancilla’s 15-8 win against Ridgewater in the RussMatt Invitational. On Sunday, Bumbalough, a sophomore from Columbus East, scored two runs in a 9-3 win against Century.

Taylor earns save for Kaskaskia

KASKASKIA, Ill. — Clayton Taylor recorded the final out to record his second save of the season Friday in Kaskaskia’s 3-1 win against Lewis and Clark.

Meyer pitches in Aces’ loss, win

Jakob Meyer allowed one run on three hits over the final 2.2 innings Wednesday in Evansville’s 7-3 loss at Vanderbilt.

MARTIN, Tenn. — Starting pitcher Zach Wager allowed three runs on five hits in five innings Sunday in UT-Martin’s 10-8 loss to Middle Tennessee.

Wilson wins singles match

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — Ashlie Wilson won her No. 5 singles match Friday to help Purdue to its first Big Ten indoor tennis win of the season, a 4-3 decision at Rutgers.

With the Boilermakers trailing 3-0, Wilson, a sophomore from Columbus North, beat Mai Nguyen 7-6 (3), 6-4 to put them on the board. Wilson and Kennedy Gibbs lost to Minchae Kim and Nguyen 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Purdue will host No. 24 Wisconsin on Saturday.

Murphy helps Olivet to victory

Daniel Murphy, a junior from Columbus East, recorded four points, two rebounds, five assists and a block in 16 minutes Wednesday to help Olivet Nazarene to a 104-77 win against St. Ambrose (Iowa).

Stahl scores in ISU defeats

Saige Stahl notched three points, three rebounds, a steal and a block in 11 minutes Sunday in Indiana State’s 87-70 Missouri Valley Conference loss at Murray State.

MARION — Koryn Greiwe, a redshirt-freshman from Columbus East, recorded one rebound and one assist in 5 minutes Tuesday in Indiana Wesleyan’s 114-62 first-round Crossroads League Tournament win against Taylor.

The Wildcats (27-3) beat Spring Arbor 80-67 in Friday’s semifinals and fell to Marian 77-66 in Monday’s championship game. IWU will await an NAIA Tournament bid.
