Ferdon set to give state of the city address Wednesday

Carla Clark | For The Republic Mayor Mary Ferdon speaks during the City of Columbus elected officials swearing in ceremony in the Cal Brand meeting hall at the city hall in Columbus, Ind. Monday, January 1, 2024.

Columbus Mayor Mary Ferdon is set to give her first state of the city address Wednesday night.

The speech begins at 6 p.m. at NexusPark with doors opening at 5:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

After the address, a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place for the 150,000-square-foot Circle K Fieldhouse at NexusPark, city officials said.

Ferdon was involved during the project’s inception while director of administration and community development in former Mayor Jim Linehoop’s administration and joined both him and CRH President and CEO Jim Bickel to break ground on the fieldhouse just over one year ago.

NexusPark is a joint effort between the city of Columbus and Columbus Regional Health to transform the former FairOaks Mall into a health, wellness and recreation center.

CRH hosted a grand opening for the healthcare portions of NexusPark on Jan. 24.

The Circle K Fieldhouse features four basketball courts— two that are high school regulation and two that are college regulation. The college regulation courts, named by local software company LHP, will be home to IU Columbus’ men’s and women’s basketball teams next season, along with IUC’s Cheer and Dance team. There are additional lines on the four courts that allow for eight volleyball courts and six pickelball courts.

McCormick Fields — directly adjacent to the courts separated by netting — feature 100,000 square feet of turf, a full-size soccer field, and two softball/baseball diamonds.

The facility has been undergoing a soft-launch in the past month or so and has hosted local teams including the Columbus Express Soccer Club to try out the space.

NexusPark Fieldhouse sports manager Harvey Scruggs previously told The Republic that information about memberships will become available this month and everything will be fully up and running in April.
