Looking Back – March 14

Shredded doughnuts and milk at the ready, 185-pound Columbus North High School sophomore Randle McCorkle, 16, chews away to set a new 15-minute doughnut speed-eating world record on March 14, 1974.

2014

A hands-on exhibit at the kidscommons, City by Design, invited children and their parents to imagine and build Columbus in 2050. Designed by the Redbox Workshop in Chicago, the exhibit asked kids to channel their inner architect, designer or builder.

1999

The Columbus Police Department Emergency Response Team won the 1999 Showdown of the Shields weightlifting competition at FairOaks Mall and raised almost $4,000 for Special Olympics participants. The team recorded 656 repetitions, followed by Edinburgh Fire/Police, which finished second with 594 repetitions.

1974

After 13 minutes and 55 seconds of cramming handfuls of donuts into his jaws, Randy McCorkle set a world record for doughnut speed-eating at Grandview Grocery. The Columbus North High School sophomore consumed 36 doughnuts within the quarter-hour mark, which gave him the world record by one doughnut.
