Update: Clifford couple escapes home destroyed by fire

5 P.M. UPDATE

CLIFFORD — An adult couple were the only occupants of a home in Clifford destroyed by fire Friday morning.
Both the man and woman escaped injuries during the 7:05 a.m. blaze at the corner of North John and Sugar Street, Clifford Deputy Fire Chef David Goff said.
When first responders arrived on the scene, they could see heavy flames coming from the front of the one-story ranch-style home, as well as through the roof, Goff said.
The deputy fire chief said he did not know the names of the occupants.  But Goff said he did learn the couple did have insurance on their house.
Bartholomew County fire inspector Gene Wever is still trying to determine the cause, Goff said.

ORIGINAL STORY

CLIFFORD — Fire destroyed a residence in Clifford Friday morning.

Emergency 911 dispatchers received the call on the house fire shortly after 7 a.m., Hope Fire Chief Adam Mathis said. Hope volunteers assisted firefighters from Clifford in battling the flames.

The fire erupted in a one-story, ranch style house on Sugar Street on the north side of the small community, Mathis said.

By the time first responders arrived, the house was already engulfed in flames, the fire chief said. However, he added there were no injuries.

The names of the occupants, damage estimates and cause are not available at this time.
