Sheriff swears in two new deputies

Bartholomew County Sheriff Chris Lane recently swore in two new merit deputies in a ceremony attended by their family, members of the sheriff’s office and several Bartholomew County Commissioners and Council members.

Ben Clancy, 25, is a Columbus native who lives in Seymour. Clancy graduated from Columbus East High School, after which he served more than four years in the United States Marine Corps, assigned to a security forces detail.

William Martin, 23, of Sellersburg, graduated from Henryville High School then enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he spent five years in the infantry and security forces. He previously worked as a corrections officer at the Floyd County Jail.

Both Clancy and Martin completed the rigorous hiring process, which involves written and physical testing, followed by a battery of interviews and a comprehensive background investigation.

The sheriff’s office is accepting applications for merit deputies until April 30. Those wishing to apply should visit the online application portal at www.policeapp.com.

“We are looking for those with a desire to serve the community,” Lane said. “These new deputies will be given the proper training and tools to go out and make a difference in our community. I am happy to have them as members of my office and wish them luck.”
