Saturday night’s All-Area All-Star Games brought players together from The Republic’s nine area high schools and featured most of the players on its All-Area team that will be announced this week.

In the girls game, the Blue team, featuring players from Columbus North and Trinity Lutheran, beat the Orange 102-69. The Orange team consisted of players from Columbus East, Columbus Christian, Jennings County, Brown County and South Decatur.

North freshman Kaylie Harmon was named the girls game’s MVP after scoring 31 points on 11-of-16 shooting, including 9-of-14 from 3-point range.

“It was a lot of fun playing with people I haven’t played with before,” Harmon said. “It’s not really taking the game insanely serious, but just having fun. I just wanted to come out here and knock down some shots.”

Trinity senior Liza Froedge added 21 points for the Blue. Trinity freshman Marley Warren had 13 points and nine rebounds, North freshman Avery Johnson and Trinity senior Madison Keith each scored 12 points and North sophomore Miley McClellan added nine points and eight rebounds.

“I was a little nervous,” said Froedge, who led the Cougars to a sectional title last month. “I haven’t shot or anything since regional, so I wasn’t sure how it would go, but I think it went well. I’m happy I was able to play one more time since regional and have this one end on a fun note.”

The Orange was led by the Columbus East senior duo of Madelyn Poe and Jenna Guse. Poe had 20 points and eight rebounds, while Guse added 18 points and eight rebounds.

“It was really nice to have one last final dance and be able to come out here with girls that all have high basketball IQ and just smile and have a good time,” Guse said.

Columbus Christian sophomore Emma Murray added eight points and six rebounds for the Orange.

Proceeds from the game, which totaled more than $2,200, benefited the Shewmaker family. Kole Shewmaker, who was a sophomore at North, died in a car accident just before the start of the recent basketball season.

“I think it was a lot of fun to be able to play with people from other schools for a great cause, and it was an opportunity where we could just have fun with each other and end our senior season just playing together with people who are also very talented,” Poe said.
