East grad to give free eclipse talks

Maria Schwartzman Webb will share a multi-media presentation spanning eclipse basics to advanced topics at YES Cinema April 5 and 6.

YES Cinema at 328 Jackson St. in downtown Columbus is hosting two free identical special solar eclipse events titled “Here Comes the Moon: An Eclipse Guide in Totality.”

Columbus native Maria Schwartzman Webb will share a multi-media presentation spanning eclipse basics to advanced topics. This event, scheduled at 4 p.m. April 5 and at 10:30 a.m. April 6, will give insights into what to expect and pay attention to during the eclipse, how to watch and photograph the eclipse without hurting your eyes or cameras, and why eclipses have captivated humanity for thousands of years, among other topics.

Concessions, including specialty eclipse-themed items, beer, and wine will be available for purchase.

Webb was raised in Columbus. She graduated from Columbus East in 2006, DePauw University in 2010, and George Washington University in 2013. She currently teaches computer science at DePauw University and is also a photographer specializing in landscape, nightscape, and travel photography.

Organizers say that she is passionate about all things space- and sky-related.

Webb has personally witnessed one total solar eclipse (2017), one partial solar annular eclipse (2023), and three lunar eclipses (total in 2019 and 2022, partial in 2021).

The nonprofit YES Cinema is a key component in the city’s downtown, using its profits to fund programs to help some of the more challenged families in the Lincoln-Central Neighborhood’s jurisdiction through the Lincoln-Central Neighboorhood Family Center.
