In-person voter registration extended until April 9 due to eclipse

Bartholomew County officials have extended the in-person voter registration deadline due to county offices being closed on the final day of voter registration due to the solar eclipse.

Bartholomew County Clerk Shari Lentz said that the deadline to register to vote for the May primary at the county voter registration office in the Bartholomew County Courthouse from the end of the day April 8 to noon on Tuesday, April 9.

However, the deadline to register to vote online at indianavoters.in.gov has not been extended and will continue to be April 8 at 11:59 p.m., Lentz said.

“The Indiana Election Code allows for us to accept over-the-county, in-our-office registration until noon on April 9,” Lentz said.

Early in-person voting will start Tuesday at Donner Center, 739 22nd St., and continue weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. through May 3.

Early in-person voting also will be held the two Saturdays before Election Day — April 27 and May 4 — from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Donner Center and the Bartholomew County Government Office Building, and 8 a.m. to noon at Donner Center on May 6.

So far, county election officials say they have not seen an increase in voter registration ahead of the primary despite several contested races.

Currently, there are about 1,000 more registered voters in Bartholomew County than the primary in 2020, according to county records.

As of Monday morning, there were 52,356 registered voters in Bartholomew County, as well as 103 registrations that were still pending, Lentz said.

By comparison, there were 51,393 registered voters for the 2020 presidential primary, according to the county’s 2020 primary election summary report.

“We do have several competitive races,” Lentz said. “However, we haven’t seen a big uptick in registration activity. …We hope as we head toward that deadline that we’ll see some more registration come through.”
