As last-minute filers rush to get their state and federal tax returns finished before the deadline, property tax bills will be going out in Bartholomew County at the end of next week.

Tax bills are only mailed once a year for the payment of the two annual installments, Bartholomew County Treasurer Barb Hackman said. The deadline for paying the spring installment is Friday, May 10.

There are a variety of ways to make your payment:

Mail: If you choose mail, send it to the Bartholomew County Treasurer, P.O. Box 1986, Columbus, IN 47202. The payment must be postmarked by the due date to be considered on time.

In person: Those who wish to pay in person can do so in the Treasurer’s office, located on the first floor of the Bartholomew County Governmental Office building at the corner of Third and Franklin streets. The office, located in Suite 103, is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Nights and weekends: After-hour payments are made through two drop boxes outside the Governmental Office building. One is located directly across the street from the Crump Theatre, while the other is on the other side of the building near the back entrance.

Local banks: Five banks will accept property tax payments prior to the May 10 due date: Central Credit Union, First Financial Bank, Jackson County Bank, Horizon Bank and German American bank.

Online: Payments over the internet that utilize debit or credit cards can be made by visiting the county’s website at bartholomew.in.gov. On the main page, click on the ‘View/Pay Taxes Online’ icon, which is one of a dozen located right of the photograph of the county courthouse.

Phone: Those who wish to pay by phone with debit or credit cards can call 844-278-9126. Those who pay by phone will be assessed a convenience fee, Hackman said.

The fall installment of property taxes will be due on Tuesday, Nov. 12.
