Looking Back – April 17

A picture of legendary quarterback Johnny Unitas (left hand page) in a 1956 Baltimore Colts photo album brings a smile to Columbus retiree Dick Nyers on April 10, 2014. Nyers played alongside Unitas in the 1950s and caught the first touchdown pass Unitas threw in the National Football League.

2014

A concert to benefit the Brendon B. McGinnis Congenital CMV Foundation including live music, a silent auction, raffles and door prizes was held at the Fraternal Order of Eagles 655. Two bands from Columbus, Mayan Miscalculation and The House Burners, performed at the event.

1999

Dynamic piano duo Randall Frieling and David Duncan brought their talent to Columbus’ North Christian Church for two concerts. The concerts, sponsored by the church’s Christian Women’s Fellowship, benefited a project that built houses for Central American families suffering in the wake of Hurricane Mitch.

1974

Lewis Lortz’s pin oak and Samuel Artis’ American Linden were named the biggest trees of their kind known in the state. Both trees were located in Hope.
