Columbus resident among 14 arrested by Indianapolis police after Gaza ceasefire protest on Meridian Street

INDIANAPOLIS — A Columbus resident was among 14 people arrested Thursday in a protest calling for a Gaza ceasefire on Meridian Street in Indianapolis.

Indianapolis police said Payton Emberton, 24, Columbus, was among the 14 people arrested outside the governor’s mansion on Meridian after protesters moved from Tarkington Park and then on to Meridian south of the park, blocking intersections between 46th and 49th streets.

Indianapolis police blocked traffic at the scene and told protesters they needed to leave the street or they would be arrested.

“IMPD respects and values the right of people to peacefully assemble and protest,” IMPD said on X. “However, obstructing traffic is unlawful and is subject to arrest. We continue to ask protesters to move out of the middle of the streets.”

No injuries were reported.
